How does a fan cam scoreboard shorten team names?
Names of up to 4 characters appear on the scoreboard in full, in capitals: Rex becomes REX and BDAY stays BDAY. Longer names are shortened. Two or more words become their initials (Happy Birthday → HB), and a single longer word usually becomes its first three letters (Sarah → SAR). For exact lettering, type your own code of up to 4 letters and check the Step 5 scoreboard preview before you tap Generate.
This post covers only the team names. For the score, clock and inning, see fan cam score, clock and inning formats. For the whole process, from the photo to saving the clip, follow the step-by-step fan cam guide.
The three rules
FanCam AI turns each team name into a short code with the same steps every time:
- Up to 4 characters: kept in full. The name is shown in capitals. Spaces at the start or end are ignored, but a space inside the name counts as a character.
- Two or more words: initials. The board takes the first character of each word and keeps at most 4 of them, so "The Big Blue Team Machine" becomes TBBT.
- One word longer than 4 characters: usually the first three letters. Sunset becomes SUN. Some longer single-word names use a built-in special code instead of their first three letters. If the preview shows a code you did not expect, type your own short name.
Twelve names checked
Each row was run through the app's own shortening logic (mirrored in the website's tools), not guessed.
| You type | On the board | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Rex | REX | Up to 4 characters |
| Cats | CATS | Up to 4 characters |
| BDAY | BDAY | Up to 4 characters |
| Blue | BLUE | Up to 4 characters |
| Sarah | SAR | One longer word |
| Sunset | SUN | One longer word |
| Birthday | BIR | One longer word |
| Happy Birthday | HB | Initials |
| Grandma Rose | GR | Initials |
| Blue Team | BT | Initials |
| Class of 2026 | CO2 | Initials (numbers count as a word) |
| The Big Blue Team Machine | TBBT | Initials, first 4 only |
Class of 2026 shows why the preview matters: the year counts as a word, so the board reads CO2. If you want a year on the board, type it as the name itself (2026 has 4 characters and stays in full).
Two names, one code
The app refuses identical names for home and away, with the message "Home and away names or colors must be different." It compares the full names you type, ignoring capitals, not the codes:
- Blue and blue are refused: only the capitals differ.
- Blue Team and Bowling Trio are accepted, yet their codes match: "Blue Team" becomes BT and "Bowling Trio" becomes BT. The scoreboard then shows the same code twice, so the codes no longer identify the two sides clearly.
The fix is to give each side its own short name: BLUE and BLK, or REX and CATS.
The code is not the whole story: home colors
The fields are labelled "Home Team / Color" and "Away Team / Color" ("Club" instead of "Team" for baseball), with the hint text "Team or color" in the empty field. The scoreboard shows only the code, but the full home entry you type is also what guides the color of the fan's jersey and the crowd around them.
So the home name does two jobs, and a color word is the simplest way to cover both:
- Blue, Gold and Teal have 4 characters or fewer, so they stay in full on the board and name a color.
- Purple and Orange are longer, so the board shows PUR and ORA, but the full word still names the color.
- A bare code like BT tells the board what to show but gives no color to work from.
The colors are interpreted by the AI, so treat a color word as guidance, not an exact shade. We have not tested how reliably each color is followed.
The example at the top
The clip on this page is the poodle example from the dog fan cam page. Its scoreboard reads BLUE 2-1 RED: both names have 4 characters or fewer, so they appear in full. The home side is a color, and the dog's jersey and the crowd around it came out blue.
Check it in the preview
- In Step 3, Match Details, type the home and away names.
- Scroll to Step 5, Scoreboard. The preview draws the board with the codes the video will use, in whichever style you pick.
- If a code is not what you want, go back and type the code itself, up to 4 letters.
One trap: if a name field is empty, the preview falls back to the default BLUE and RED, so it can look finished. Generate still asks for the name ("Enter a fictional home name or color."). As that message says, use fictional names or colors; for name ideas that fit a short code, see fan cam ideas.
FanCam AI is free to download; each video uses purchased credits (10 credits for 480p, 20 for HD 720p). The preview costs nothing, so settle the codes before you tap Generate.
